New Delhi
The Department of Ophthalmology of AIIMS, University of Hyderabad and National Program for Control of Blindness and Visual Impairment (NPCBVI) recently conducted a survey in 21 districts of the country. The survey revealed that 17 percent of diabetic patients are suffering from retinopathy, a disease related to the retina. This can lead to loss of eyesight. One worrying thing in the survey was that many people were not even aware that they had diabetes.

In 4 percent of these people, the problem was so severe that there is a risk of loss of eyesight. While the disease of 12 percent of the patients was not that serious. Researchers taking part in the study say that in order to reduce diabetic retinopathy, it is important that people with diabetes are diagnosed early and regularly screened for problems related to the eyes.

The results of the survey have been published in the latest issue of the Indian Journal of Ophthalmology (IJO). The total sample size of this survey was 63,000 in which people aged 50 years and above were included. According to the report published in IJO, about 12 percent of the people surveyed were diabetic patients.
