Who Are the Republican Candidates in the California Recall?
Clockwise from top left: Kevin Faulkner, John Cox, Kevin Kelly, Caitlyn Jenner and Larry Elder.
Dozens of Republicans are running to replace California Governor Gavin Newsom. But only a few of them have registered any meaningful support in the election or raised the kind of money needed to run a statewide campaign.
These include political heavyweights such as Kevin Faulkner, the former mayor of San Diego, and Kevin Kelly, a member of the state legislature from Rocklin. There are several business leaders, including John Cox, who has previously run for office several times, and first-time candidates, including Larry Elder, a talk radio personality, and Caitlyn Jenner, a former Olympian.
Their vast differences reflect the unaffiliated nature of California’s Republican Party – an institution that has been hollowed out over the years and is now so small that it is practically a third party.
