Fraud By Duplicate Sim Card: The Information Technology Department of Rajasthan has ordered private telecom company Vodafone Idea Limited to pay Rs 27.53 lakh to one of its consumers. 68.50 lakhs were withdrawn from this customer’s account through duplicate SIM cards. According to the department, the company issued duplicate SIM to another person without proper verification of documents due to which the aggrieved customer suffered loss.
Justice Adjudication Officer and Principal Secretary IT Department Alok Gupta issued its order on September 6. A complaint was lodged by the company’s consumer Krishna Lal Nain in this regard. The company has been asked to pay Rs 27,53,183 to the complainant in a month. According to the complaint, Nain’s mobile SIM stopped working on May 25, 2017.
68.50 lakh fraud
Nain informed the company’s Hanumangarh store and a new SIM card was issued but it was activated on May 31. Meanwhile, a duplicate SIM of the same number was issued to Bhanupratap in Alwar. On activating the SIM, Nain came to know that Rs 68.50 lakh has been transferred from his account by taking OTP on his duplicate number.

The customer had to make a lot of effort
A report was also filed in this matter in the police station on June 2, 2017. Meanwhile, the accused got Rs 44 lakhs deposited back in the account of the complainant but Rs 24.50 lakh was left. In May 2020, Nain filed a complaint under the IT Act 2000 and appealed to the adjudicating officer to get him Rs 34.50 lakh from the company. This includes the balance amount and interest of Rs 24.50 lakh.

The officer has held the company guilty under sections 43 and 43A of the IT Act. In this, the company has been asked to pay Rs 27,53,183 lakh to the complainant Nain in a month. If the company fails to pay the amount within this period, it will attract compound interest at the rate of 10 per cent.
