virat kohli statement: virat kohli statement after great victory on afghanistan in t20 world cup; India got its first win after heavy criticism, know what captain Virat Kohli said
India captain Virat Kohli has heaped praise on veteran Ravichandran Ashwin after opening his account with a 66-run win over Afghanistan in a group two match of the Super 12 stage of the ICC T20 World Cup, saying his return has been a positive thing for the team. Chasing India’s target of 211 runs, Afghanistan’s team could only manage 144 runs for seven wickets. For Afghanistan, only captain Mohammad Nabi (35 runs in 32 balls) and Karim Janat (42 not out off 22 balls) could cross the 20-run mark.
Kohli said after the match, “Ash’s comeback has been a very positive aspect, he has worked hard for it. He showed this kind of control and rhythm in the IPL as well. He is a wicket-taker who bowls intelligently. Kohli said that today’s wicket was better than the team’s first two matches. He said, ‘To be honest, the wicket was much better. Even in the first two matches, if we could have batted freely for two overs, we could have put the opposition under pressure. Kohli said the order of his top three batsmen is fixed, except in exceptional circumstances.
The Indian captain said, ‘Our top three batsmen are almost certain, unless something like it happens today. Had the top two batsmen played for 14 or 15 overs, it would not have been a decision whether to bat fast. We have to support the players because they have a lot of skill and sometimes they perform like they are today. Kohli, however, also credited the bowlers of Pakistan and New Zealand for not letting the team play freely in the first two matches. Kohli also said that his eyes are still on qualifying for the semi-finals.
He said, ‘Net run rate was on our mind. We talked in the team meeting that whatever chance we have of qualifying we have to focus and stay positive. Asked about his decision to bat later on a good wicket, Afghanistan captain Nabi said that due to the dew, he decided to bowl first. “We wanted to bat later because of the dew and the wicket looked good enough to bat on,” he said. In the end, there was not that much dew but India batted very well on this pitch and put our bowlers under pressure. We didn’t rotate the strike well in the middle overs and came under pressure after losing wickets.
Rohit, who was adjudged the player of the match, said that his team was eyeing a good start which they failed to do against Pakistan and New Zealand. “We wanted to start well which didn’t happen in the first two matches. We wanted to create a good platform so that later batsmen can play freely. Rohit also praised his fellow opener Rahul. Rohit said that considering the potential for net run rate to play a key role, they wanted to register a big win. “We wanted to field first but it was a good pitch to bat on. A good start and a respectable score was very important for our team. We know run rate can play an important role and we wanted to win by a huge margin. Glad that we were able to do so.
