A Sikh man was imprisoned inside a detention home in the US state of Arizona and forced to cut his hair and beard. Keeping hair and beard is religiously necessary in Sikhism and the victim Surjit Singh had never cut his hair for the last 60 years. Surjit Singh believes that hair is a gift from God. Human rights organizations have been agitated over this humiliating incident and have demanded the government not to allow such an incident to happen again.

Surjit Singh came to a detention home in Arizona last year. During this, his turban was removed by the officers and his beard was also forcibly cut. These officers wanted to take the picture of Surjit Singh. Many legal human rights groups have now complained about it. Singh had gone into the shadows after this whole incident. The complaint states that Surjit Singh had also told the officers that you should cut my throat but not my hair and beard.

Only one inch beard allowed
Senior staff attorney Cindy Nesbitt of a Sikh-affiliated organization told CNN that we understand Surjit Singh’s hair was most important to him. Cutting hair is a clear violation of their right to religious freedom. The complaint also states that Surjit knows Punjabi and has little English knowledge. They were also not provided with a bilingual.

Photographs with a beard are prohibited in an Arizona prison. Each prisoner’s beard is cleaned before being put in jail. Only one inch beard is allowed. In 2017, he was sentenced to five years of imprisonment after an accident. His turban was also removed at Yuma’s detention home. That too when the bilingual told government officials that it was necessary from a religious point of view. Sikh organizations have demanded that the government change its policies in this regard.
