Ukrainian actor Pasha Lee reportedly killed in combat

A male ballet dancer. An award winning female actor. a biathlete. An actor who posted glamorous selfies and uploaded two final shots of himself looking stylish in camouflage till he joined his nearly 13,000 followers on Instagram.

These are some of the Ukrainian celebrities killed since the Russian invasion on February 24. His death adds an extra dimension to the nation’s shock and anguish over the war.

Artem Datshin, one of Ukraine’s leading dancers and former lead dancer of the National Opera of Ukraine, died on Thursday in a hospital in the capital city of Kyiv. He was injured last month by Russian artillery fire, according to posts posted by two friends on social media.

Mr Datshin was a past winner of the prestigious Serge Lifar Prize, named after a Ukrainian one of the most important ballet dancers and choreographers of the 20th century.

“I can’t express my heartache,” Tatiana Borovic said in a post on Facebook announcing the date of Mr Datshin’s funeral.

Ukrainian actress Oksana Shvets was killed in a rocket attack on the capital, the Kyiv Post newspaper reported on Thursday. Ms. Shvets was a member of the city’s Young Theater and won the Merited Artist of Ukraine Award in 1996. A photo on the theater’s website shows him in costume on stage.

Oleksandra Matvichuk, head of Ukraine’s Center for Civil Liberties, said the war is narrowing the distance between famous and ordinary Ukrainians as many non-celebrities are making heroic sacrifices. It has also focused many on issues of life and death that the eclipse focuses on fame.

“Prominent people use their privilege not to run away but to stand with the whole country in this dramatic time,” Ms Matvichuk said, though she said what struck her most about the war was that murder of children

The International Biathlon Union mourns the death of 19-year-old athlete Yevgeny Malyshev. It said in a Twitter post on March 2 that he died while serving in the army. Biathlon is a sport that combines cross-country skiing and rifle shooting.

Pasha Lee, a Crimean actor, was murdered in Irpin on Sunday local journalist and Odessa International Film Festival. The city, located 15 miles northwest of Kyiv, has seen fierce fighting between Russian and Ukrainian forces.

Mr. Lee, 33, worked in theater and cinema. He was also a television host, singer and musician.

Before the war, her Instagram feed featured a glamorous lifestyle. One photo showed him on a yacht, another scuba diving, a third in Dubai.

Mr. Lee joined the Territorial Defense Forces of Ukraine when the war broke out.

On March 1, he was pictured sitting at a table in an army uniform and a beret. In his last Instagram post on March 4, he’s in combat gear again, this time sitting next to a woman in uniform. They were being bombarded, the caption said, adding, “We smile because we’ll manage.”

He died in the gunfight two days later.
