Indian badminton star PV Sindhu’s dream of winning a gold medal at the Tokyo Olympic Games was shattered after Chinese Taipei lost in straight games to world number one Tai Tzu Ying here on Saturday. Rio Olympic silver medalist Sindhu put up a tough challenge to Tai Tzu in the first game but ended up losing 18-21, 12-21 in a 40-minute match. Sindhu now has a chance to become the first Indian woman to win two individual medals at the Olympics.

She will take on China’s He Bing Xiao for the bronze on Sunday, who was defeated by compatriot Chen Yu Fei 21-16, 13-21, 21-12 in the first semi-final. Both of these players played 18 matches before the semi-finals in which Tai Tzu won 13 matches and they continued their dominance on Saturday as well. Although the Chinese Taipei player took some time to gain momentum initially but the Indian players could not put pressure on her.

Tai Tzu scored the first two points in the opening game but after that Sindhu looked more aggressive as she scored five consecutive points to make the score 5-2 in her favor. Sindhu played a shot out at 8-4 to give points to Tai Tzu but the Indian was ahead 11-8 till the interval.

Sindhu was ahead at the start of the second game but Tai Tzu made the score 4-4 with a fine drop shot to take a 7-4 lead with four consecutive points. The Indian made good efforts from his side but Tai Tzu smacked him a lot on the court and put Sindhu under pressure to lead 11-7 till the interval.
