The record procurement of wheat has been achieved amidst protests from farmers sitting on the borders of Delhi since late November 2020. Farmers’ unions are demanding repeal of three new agriculture laws and legal guarantee of Minimum Support Price (MSP).
The Rabi marketing season runs from April to March but most of the procurement takes place in June.
An official statement said, “The procurement of wheat under the current Rabi chipping season for the year 2021-22 in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir is proceeding smoothly at MSP as in the previous year. Sessions was also done.”
Wheat has been procured till June 8 to the tune of 418.47 lakh tonnes, as against 373.22 lakh tonnes in the same period a year ago.
About 46 lakh farmers have already been benefitted by the ongoing procurement drive at an MSP price of about Rs 82,648.38 crore, the statement said.
The procurement has surpassed the previous high of 389.92 lakh tonnes achieved in the entire 2020-21 marketing year.
The State-owned Food Corporation of India (FCI) is the principal agency for procurement and distribution of food grains.
Under the National Food Security Act (NFSA), the Center sells five kg of wheat and rice per person per month to around 80 crore people at a highly subsidized rate of Rs 2-3 per kg.
It has also been announced to provide free food grains to the people during the Kovid crisis.
