The former chairperson of the appellate tribunal challenged the reduction of tenure in the court

New Delhi, Sep 15 (PTI) Former chairperson of the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) Justice Ashok Iqbal Singh Cheema has challenged the reduction in his tenure in the Supreme Court.

The matter is listed for hearing on Thursday before a bench of Chief Justice NV Ramana, Justice Surya Kant and Justice Hima Kohli.

Cheema, in his petition, has termed the reduction in tenure as arbitrary.

Earlier in the day, the top court had expressed displeasure over Justice M Venugopal being appointed as the acting chairperson of the appellate tribunal in a “hasty”.

The court had taken exception to the fact that Cheema was due to retire on September 20, but before that “hasty” he was removed and Justice Venugopal was appointed in his place.

Venugopal was appointed as the Acting Chairperson of the Appellate Tribunal on September 11, 2021.
