syed akabaruddin new book on diplomacy: when sushma swaraj did not attend phone call of then british foreign secretary boris johnson
Just think Britain’s Foreign Minister calls the Foreign Minister of India but the Indian Foreign Minister refuses to talk. But it happened. Sushma Swaraj did not pick up the phone of the then British Foreign Minister Boris Johnson. Syed Akbaruddin, India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, has told this interesting anecdote in his new book. Diplomacy is such a thing, when the sympathizers change their side, when the ‘non’ considered themselves become their own, where nothing can go.
Syed Akbaruddin, who was India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, has mentioned many such anecdotes in his new book ‘India vs UK: Story of an Unpresident Diplomatic Win’. In an interview with our associate newspaper Times of India, Akbaruddin has told why Sushma ji did not pick up Boris Johnson’s phone. Incidentally, Johnson is the Prime Minister of Britain today.
American diplomats were lobbying against India
Indeed, in 2017 the election of a judge of the International Court of Justice had become a question of prestige for India and Britain. It was a contest between Dalbir Bhandari from India and Sir Christopher Greenwood from Britain. Britain put all its might. He had the support of all the big countries including America. American diplomats were openly lobbying against India.
China backtracked on promise
China had assured support. But when the then Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj called the Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, she did not pick up the phone. Perhaps the reason for the standoff in Doklam or the deceitful nature of China.
Friends, India got disappointment from Japan
Even Japan did not give a price to India for the sake of Britain. He felt that Britain was going to win unilaterally, so what was the point of going with India. This attitude of Japan was surprising not only for India, but also for the members of the Security Council.
And when Sushma did not pick up Johnson’s phone
Syed Akbaruddin has told in his new book that India may not get support from big and powerful countries but it got tremendous support from small countries. There was support from neighboring countries. He has written that India was confident of its victory. Akbaruddin advised Sushma Swaraj not to receive phone calls from anyone. On the other hand, Britain was completely confident of its victory. In a last-ditch effort to persuade India, the then Foreign Minister Boris Johnson telephoned Indian counterpart Sushma Swaraj. But Sushma did not even pick up his phone.
And India registered a big diplomatic victory
When the results came, India got a resounding victory. What a big setback it was for Britain, it can be gauged from the fact that it happened after 71 years when there is no UK judge in the ICJ.
