Santa Clara County Sheriff’s spokesman Deputy Russel Davis said he could not give an exact number of dead and wounded.
The shooting took place at the Railroad Center adjacent to the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Department. It is a transit control center where trains stand and a maintenance yard.
Davis said the victims included personnel from the Valley Transportation Authority (VTA).
The VTA provides bus, light rail and other transit services in Santa Clara County. The county is the largest in the Bay Area and this is where Silicon Valley is located.
A VTA spokesperson did not respond despite several requests for comment.
San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo tweeted, “Our hearts go out to the families who lost their loved ones in this horrific shooting.”
Governor Gavin Newsom said on Twitter that his office was in close contact with local law enforcers and the situation was being closely monitored.
Officials said experts from the FBI and Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are present at the crime scene.
