The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has laid down specific guidelines regarding investment objectives in its standards for operating silver ETFs. Apart from this, instructions have also been given regarding valuation, determination of net asset value (NAV), tracking loopholes and disclosure requirements.
At present, Indian mutual funds are allowed to bring only gold ETFs. But after this circular from SEBI, the operations of silver ETFs are expected to become easier.
SEBI has said in its circular that it will be mandatory for silver ETFs to invest a minimum of 95 percent in silver and silver related investment instruments.
Along with this, the market regulator has also recognized exchange traded commodity derivatives (ETCDs) containing silver as an investment instrument for silver ETFs.
