- Former CAG Vinod Rai has unconditionally apologized to Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam for mentioning his name.
- He accused Nirupam of not including former PM Manmohan Singh’s name in the 2G spectrum CAG report.
- In 2014, the former CAG had made the allegation in his book and reiterated it in interviews to the media.
Former Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) Vinod Rai has unconditionally apologized to Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam for mentioning the name of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in the CAG report in the 2G spectrum allocation case. Is. Rai had mentioned Nirupam’s name in his book with MPs who had reportedly pressured him not to name former prime minister Manmohan Singh in the CAG report.
In 2014, Nirupam filed a defamation suit against Rai after the former CAG made the allegations in his book and reiterated it in interviews to the media. The Metropolitan Magistrate’s court at Patiala House, accepting Rai’s apology, recorded Nirupam’s statement and disposed of the matter.
‘Nirupam has accepted the apology’
Nirupam’s lawyer RK Handu said, “Vinod Rai has been acquitted in the case. Since Nirupam has accepted his apology, the matter has been settled after recording his statement. The former CAG, in an affidavit filed in the court, has said that he has inadvertently and wrongly mentioned Nirupam’s name earlier.
‘I unintentionally and wrongly…’
Vinod Rai, in his affidavit, said, “I had inadvertently and wrongly mentioned the name of Sanjay Nirupam as one of the MPs who attended the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) meetings or the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) meetings.” Apart from this, the CAG report on 2G spectrum allocation had pressed for the exclusion of the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s name.
‘Nirupam will consider my apology’
The former CAG has also said that the statements made by him against Nirupam are factually incorrect. In his affidavit filed in the court, Rai said, “I understand that my statement has hurt Sanjay Nirupam, his family and his well-wishers and I want to apologize unconditionally for the same.” I hope Sanjay Nirupam will consider and accept my unconditional apology and close the issue.
‘The country should apologize’
Nirupam later said that Rai should apologize to the nation for the CAG reports on 2G spectrum and coal block allocation. He alleged that both of them were ‘fake’. He later said, ‘Vinod Rai should apologize to the entire country for these fake news’. He expressed happiness that his stand was upheld and the former CAG apologized for his wrong claims made against him.
