sanjay manjrekar on ravindra jadeja: WTC Final – Ravindra Jadeja was backfired, Hanuma Vihari should have got chance
- Sanjay Manjrekar said that Vihari should have got a chance in place of Jadeja in the team
- Manjrekar said Jadeja should not have been picked just for his batting
- The former batsman said that like most of the occasions, this time too this bet backfired.
Sanjay Manjrekar was disappointed with Ravindra Jadeja’s selection in the playing XI in the final of the World Test Championship against New Zealand. Manjrekar said that the decision to give Jadeja a chance as a batsman was not right. He said the decision backfired. He said that there was not much spin on the wicket which this left-hander could have taken advantage of.
While choosing his playing XI before the Test match, specialist batsman Hanuma Vihari was kept in his playing XI in place of Ravindra Jadeja.
Manjrekar said in a conversation with ESPN Cricinfo that he does not think that Ravindra Jadeja can make a place in India’s Test playing XI just on the basis of batting.
He further said, ‘If you see how the Indian team took it before the match started. Picking two spinners has always been a controversial subject. Especially when it was rainy season and the toss was also delayed by a day. He picked a player because of his batting and his name was Ravindra Jadeja. His left-arm bowling was not the reason for him to be selected. He was selected because of his batting. This is something I am always against.
Manjrekar said, ‘You should choose specialist players in the team. And if you think the pitch is dry and the ball will turn on it then you could have picked Ravindra Jadeja along with Ravichandran Ashwin. This would have been the more correct way. But they picked Jadeja for their batting and it turned out to be wrong, as happens on most occasions.
Manjrekar supports Hanuma Vihari
Hanuma Vihari played his last Test match in Sydney in Australia earlier this year. He played a brilliant innings in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. He had a muscle injury and in spite of this he remained at the crease and played a key role in getting India to draw the match.
Manjrekar feels that specialist batsmen like Hanuma Vihari might have been instrumental in taking the Indian second innings ahead of 170 runs.
Manjrekar asked the question, ‘Suppose if the team had Hanuma Vihari, who has a very good defense, it would have been very helpful. Maybe 170 could have been 220, 225 or 230, who knows?’
