Russian Navy Exercise: Russian Navy Pacific Fleet operational exercise Video: Watch video of Russian Navy maneuvers
Russia’s Navy has launched a massive naval exercise to undermine America’s growing power in the Pacific Ocean. Hundreds of warships including destroyers, corvettes, amphibious ships, submarines are involved in this maneuver. The Russian Defense Ministry has announced that the exercise, which began on Thursday, is taking place in the Central Pacific. The exercise is being commanded by Admiral Sergei Avakyants, a veteran Commander of the Russian Pacific Fleet.
Maneuvering 4000 km away from home
During this exercise, the Russian Navy will carry out missions such as military operations in extreme conditions far away from its traditional area, protecting maritime communications, locating enemy submarines by establishing communication with warships and airplanes. For this exercise, warships of the Russian Navy have been sighted at a distance of about 4000 km from their home operational areas.
These warships of the Russian Navy are included
The Russian Navy’s Pacific Fleet consists of the Varyag missile cruiser, the largest anti-submarine ship Admiral Panteleev and the frigate Marshal Shaposhnikov. In addition, the corvette Hero of the Russian Federation Eldar Tsidenzapov, Gromki and the Sovarshny warship of the Stareguschi class are also taking part. Marshal Krylov missile tracking ship is also involved in this exercise.
Fighter aircraft patrolling in the air
Around 20 aircraft including Tu-142MZ anti-submarine warfare bombers and MiG-31BM interceptors are also involved to keep an eye on enemy movements from the sky. Several Russian submarines are patrolling underwater. In the meantime, several other ships have been deployed to maintain access to logistics and ammunition.
On Thursday, Russia had driven out American reconnaissance aircraft
On Thursday itself, a Su-35 fighter aircraft of the Russian Air Force intercepted an RC-135 strategic reconnaissance aircraft of the US Air Force over the Pacific Ocean. This US ship was trying to infiltrate near the Russian border. The Russian Defense Ministry said the US often takes its spy planes, reconnaissance drones and bombers to the east.
So why is Russia doing military exercises?
The exercise comes after threats from the US that it would deploy missiles in the region after it pulled out of the Medium-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty in 2019. After this warning from America, both Russia and China have become alert. Just a month ago, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov visited China and insisted on forming an alliance against the US.
