Rupee breaks five paise against US dollar in early trade

Mumbai, Nov 22 (PTI) The rupee on Monday fell five paise to 74.35 against the US dollar in early trade on heavy selling in domestic equity markets and a firming US currency.

Forex traders said, however, lower crude oil prices limited the rupee’s fall during the period.

The rupee opened with a weak trend at 74.36 in the interbank foreign exchange market and traded higher at 74.35 against the US dollar in early trade, showing a fall of five paise over the previous closing price.

The rupee had closed at 74.30 against the US dollar on Thursday. The foreign exchange market was closed on Friday on account of Guru Nanak Jayanti.

Meanwhile, the dollar index, reflecting the US dollar’s position against the six major currencies, rose 0.10 per cent to 96.12.

Global oil benchmark Brent crude futures were down 0.19 per cent at $78.74 a barrel.
