The record procurement of wheat has been done amid protests by farmers on the borders of Delhi since November last year. Farmers’ organizations are demanding the repeal of three new agricultural laws and a legal guarantee to the Minimum Support Price (MSP).
As in the previous session, procurement of wheat on SSP in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir continues smoothly in the current Rabi marketing year (RMS).
The Food Ministry said that till May 26, 398.59 lakh tonnes of wheat was procured as compared to 350.06 lakh tonnes in the same period last year.
A government statement said that this purchase is the biggest purchase till date as it has surpassed the previous record of 389.92 lakh tonnes made in the year 2016-21.
“42.06 farmers have already benefited from the purchase of Rs 78,721.15 crore in the current Rabi marketing year,” the statement said.
The marketing year 2021-22 will be from April to March but most purchases are completed by June.
