‘Not only the farmers, the urban middle class is also with us, so the movement will continue’, read what this farmer leader said

New Delhi
It is the largest farmer organization of Punjab. Its chief Joginder Singh Ugrahan is a resident of ‘Ugrahan’ village in Sangrur district. So he associated ‘Ugrahan’ with ‘Bharatiya Kisan Union’. Women have a huge participation in their organization. On the issue of peasant movement
Joginder Singh Ugrahan to Syed Parvez Conversed. Here are the main excerpts:
  1. Farmers’ strike is going on in Delhi. In such a situation, what is the farmer-laborer mahapanchayat that took place in Muzaffarnagar?Through the Kisan Mazdoor Mahapanchayat held at GIC Maidan in Muzaffarnagar on 5th September, we wanted to highlight the corporate-subsidy of the Central Government among the people. The three new agricultural laws are not only anti-farmer, they are also unconstitutional. They have been made keeping in mind the corporate interests only. Through this Mahapanchayat, we will take the farmers’ movement to every village in India. Here we again put forward the demand for repeal of three anti-farmer agriculture laws and legal guarantee of MSP in front of the people. In this mahapanchayat lakhs of farmers from Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Assam, Bihar, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra and many other states of the country came on one platform. A large number of women and young farmers have been seen in this Mahapanchayat.
  2. You guys are shutting down India on 27th September. You have closed India in the past too, now what is new in this one?Earlier the bandh call was at the state level. Now we want to show the impact of the farmers’ movement across the country. This government is selling PSUs. The youth are largely unemployed. Inflation is increasing day by day, whether it is cooking gas, petrol, food prices, all have increased. Small shopkeepers, small factories are in disrepair. Tenancy has been ruined.
  3. The Kisan-Mazdoor Mahapanchayat has started Mission Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. What is this?Mission Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand has been started to teach a lesson to BJP in view of the upcoming elections. We want to defeat BJP in elections. We want to tell that the UP government had promised loan waiver for 86 lakh farmers, while the loans of 45 lakh farmers were also not waived. Central government agency CACP has found that in the year 2017, the cost of sugarcane was Rs 383 per quintal, but farmers were paid Rs 325 per quintal. Farmers owe Rs 8,700 crore to sugarcane mills. In Uttar Pradesh, crop insurance was paid to 72 lakh farmers in the year 2016-17, while 47 lakh farmers were paid in 2019-20, in which crop insurance companies have earned a profit of Rs 2,508 crore.
  4. The government is continuously increasing the MSP, yet why does the distrust of the farmers persist?Leaving the new hype of increasing the MSP, the government is trying unnecessarily to win the sympathy of the farmers. It is in the same way that some rupees have been put in the account of farmers. This is just the bribe given to the farmers, which the government is doing for its publicity. The new MSP has come only to divert attention from the black agricultural laws and to falsify the demand of the farmers that MSP be made into law. When these markets are opening, what will the MSP do without a law? And this new MSP also came under pressure from United Kisan Front. Had the farmers’ movement not been going on, they would not have given the MSP this time.
  5. Why are smallholder farmers unable to connect with you, and the urban middle class is still far away from you?It is wrong to not join the small farmers movement. This is just an illusion. Most of the agitators with us are small-holding farmers. There are two lakh farmer families in our organization with small holdings. The urban middle class is also with us. When we call for a bandh in the agitation, most of the traders keep their shops closed.
  6. There was a lathi charge on the farmers in Karnal, but the government has already transferred the SDM. Are you still protesting there?See, transfer is not a solution. When an educated responsible officer should not be punished? If any person says something to these leaders, then he is thrown in jail. In such a situation, what punishment should not be given to the officer who ordered ‘beheading’ of the farmers?
  7. What is the condition of the families of the farmers who died in the movement? Did Kisan Morcha do anything for them? The United Kisan Morcha does not have any funding. The governments of Punjab and Haryana have given five lakh rupees each to the families of these farmers, but the central government has not helped them financially.
  8. If the government does not withdraw all the three new agricultural laws, then this farmers’ movement will continue like this?We have no choice but to protest. When this law is implemented, we will die just like that. Our employment, our agriculture, our land will be gone. Then what will we answer to the people? This movement will continue till the government repeals all three agricultural laws.
