New York Times Tech Workers Vote to Certify Union

Tech workers from The New York Times voted Thursday to certify their union in an election for the National Labor Relations Board, making it one of America’s largest tech unions.

Activists voted 404 to 88, easily reaching the required majority of ballots cast. A win means the union, the Times Tech Guild, can begin negotiations for a contract with management.

Nozzy Samadzadeh, a senior software engineer, said, “We are really excited and really soaked in what this means, not only as the technical staff at The Times and The New York Times but also for the entire tech industry. are.” “I think this is going to be the start of a wave of eventing in the tech industry.”

Ms Samadzadeh said the union is “struggling for a stronger contract to make our workplace more fair, on the same lines as the newsroom entity – for issues of pay, diversity and equity.” Was eager to negotiate a contract around the issues.

Times spokeswoman Danielle Rhodes Ha said The Times is looking forward to working with the union to establish a contract.

“We believe this election process was important so that our allies can learn more about the union, hear both sides of the argument and, ultimately, make an informed decision.”

The Times Tech Guild, which represents about 600 software engineers, product managers, designers, data analysts and other workers, asked The Times in April for voluntary accreditation. The Times declined, so the matter went through the Labor Board to a formal election.

The Labor Board alleged in a complaint in January that The Times’ management had violated federal workplace law by preventing certain employees from showing support for the union. A spokesperson for the Times said at the time that the company disagreed with the allegations.

The Times Tech Guild is represented by the Newsguild of New York, which also represents the editorial staff at The New York Times and Wirecutter, the company’s product-review website. In 2019, The Times voluntarily recognized the Wirecutter union.
