Need to boost R&D based telecom manufacturing in the country dot officials
TK Paul, Member (Technology), Department of Telecommunications (DoT) said this on Wednesday. He said that according to the World Trade Organization (WTO) report on global supply chain, India’s contribution in telecom equipment and integrated circuits and components is only 0.15 per cent and 0.068 per cent respectively.
Paul said that this situation calls for design based manufacturing for self-reliance in the telecom sector.
“…R&D capabilities should be promoted instead of just assembly based manufacturing,” he said at the Broadband India Forum event.
Paul said, “At present 85 per cent of the demand for telecom equipment in the country is met through imports. The COVID-19 pandemic has affected the global supply chain.
“As a result, the cost of equipment has gone up due to increased demand vis–vis supply. This is the right time for us to move ahead in manufacturing and meet the domestic requirement.
Paul said, “Self-reliance in telecom manufacturing is the need of the hour.”
