In this regard, a petition was filed before the National Human Rights Commission by SK Jha, Human Rights Advocate of Muzaffarpur Civil Court. Later, considering the seriousness of the matter, the Commission had sought a response from the Ministry of External Affairs. Neha Singh, Under Secretary for Pakistan Affairs, Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India, has issued a letter on 9 August stating that “So far a total of 83 Indian soldiers are imprisoned in various jails of Pakistan. The issue of repatriation is being taken up repeatedly with the Government of Pakistan through diplomatic channels, including prisoners of war who are believed to be in Pakistani custody.

Pakistan does not accept the fact that Indian soldiers are in custody
However, Pakistan has not acknowledged the presence of any Indian defense personnel in its custody. The government is aware of this matter and it continues to take up this matter with the government of Pakistan. Human rights advocate S. Of. Jha said that the Government of India needs to take concrete decisions without any delay, so that the return of Indian soldiers can be possible.
