Telecom Secretary Anshu Prakash told PTI-language that for the first time the local languages were alerted by audio message to make people aware of the Yas cyclone.
He said, “This is the first time that messages have been sent to the people in local languages, which should have a favorable effect.” Telecom Service Providers (TSPs) readily supported providing this facility free of cost. We will add this facility as standard protocol for disaster management. ”
“A total of more than 6 crore outright messages were sent in local languages to alert local residents,” the Department of Telecommunications said in a statement. Of this, 3.87 crore was sent to West Bengal, 2.43 crore to Odisha and 36.4 lakh to Andhra Pradesh. ”
The department said the cyclone has been affected in East Medinipur, West Medinipur, Bakura, South 24 Parganas and Jhargram in West Bengal and Balasore, Bhadrak, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Jajpur, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj districts in Odisha.
According to the same sources, the telecom infrastructure has been affected by cyclone 5 to 7 percent. The main reason for this is the power cut. Services will be restored in the affected area after power is available.
