Kanpur
Mayank Agarwal returned to international cricket after about 10 months. In the first match of the series against New Zealand, he played a small innings of 13 runs in 28 balls in the first innings. Agarwal opened the innings but he did not look comfortable at the crease. New Zealand pacer Kyle Jamieson constantly troubled him. Aggarwal looked in trouble at the line of off-stump. In the end, on one such out swing, the wicketkeeper was given a simple catch.

In a conversation with ESPN Cricinfo, former Indian opener Wasim Jaffer assessed Agarwal’s batting. He said, ‘I think he could have dropped this ball.’

Jaffer further said, ‘He is often on the backfoot. The outswinger bothers him a bit. When he faces such a ball, his body is very open. He needs to work on this part of his game. Especially on such grounds where there is movement in the game. He got out because of his mistake.

Jaffer further said, ‘In this short innings, he did not look at all confident against Kyle Jamieson. And finally the ball took the outer edge of his bat. He would be very disappointed that he played the balls he could have missed.

India won the toss in Kanpur and decided to bat first. After the dismissal of Mayank Agarwal, Shubman Gill (52 off 93 balls) scored a lot of runs on the New Zealand spinners. Apart from this, Cheteshwar Pujara also handled India by playing an innings of 26 runs off 88 balls. At the end of the first session, India’s score was 82 for 1 wicket.
