The Maharashtra government has cut the rate of excise duty on imported or imported Scotch whisky by 50 percent. With this, its price in the state will be at par with other states. A senior official gave this information on Friday. “The excise duty on Scotch whiskey has been reduced from 300 to 150 per cent of the manufacturing cost,” the official said.

A notification in this regard was issued on Thursday, the official said. The Maharashtra government gets a revenue of Rs 100 crore annually on the sale of imported scotch. With this deduction, the government’s revenue is expected to increase to Rs 250 crore as it will increase sales from one lakh bottles to 2.5 lakh bottles.

Due to the reduction in duty, smuggling of Scotch from other states and sale of spurious liquor will also be curbed. The cut in excise duty has brought down the prices of imported whiskey in Maharashtra. This will increase the revenue of the state. According to the news, currently 1 lakh bottles are sold in a day, due to reduced duty, the sale of bottles can reach 2.5 lakh.
