Who is Justice BV Nagarathna who will become the first woman Chief Justice?
Before becoming a judge in the Supreme Court, Justice Nagarathna was a judge in the Karnataka High Court. Justice Nagarathna started practicing in the Karnataka High Court in 1987. He practiced law for a full 23 years and then took over as a judge. He was appointed as an additional judge in the High Court in 2008. After that, in February 2010, Justice Nagarathna was appointed as a permanent judge in the High Court. Justice BV Nagarathna will become the first woman Chief Justice of the country. She will become the first woman Chief Justice of India in September 2027 by seniority.
Third Chief Justice whose tenure will be shortest
The tenure of Chief Justice BV Nagarathna will be only 36 days. This will be the third shortest tenure of a Chief Justice in the 77-year history of the Supreme Court. Justice Kamal Narayan Singh was the Chief Justice whose tenure was shortest. He was the Chief Justice from 25 November 1991 to 13 December 1991 i.e. for just 18 days. He is followed by Justice S Rajendra Babu who served as the Chief Justice for only 30 days from May 2, 2004 to May 31, 2004. Now Justice Nagarathna will become the Chief Justice for 36 days which will be the third shortest term.
Justice Nagratna’s father was also the Chief Justice of India.
Justice ES Venkatramaiah, father of Justice BV Nagarathna, also became the Chief Justice in 1989. This will be the second time in the history of Indian judiciary, when the daughter will become the Chief Justice in the second generation after the father. Earlier, according to seniority, Justice DY Chandrachud would become the Chief Justice in November 2022. His father Justice YB Chandrachud became the Chief Justice in 1978. Justice YB Chandrachud was the Chief Justice of India for 7 years, which is the longest tenure till date.

- In the year 2012, Justice BV Nagarathna gave a judgment related to electronic media. He talked about controlling the media. However, he spoke of control in the context of creating sensation.
- In the year 2019, Justice BV Nagarathna had given a verdict regarding those working in the temples of Karnataka. Then he had said that the temples of Karnataka are not commercial institutions. In such a situation, those working here cannot be paid gratuity under the Payment of Gratuity Act, but those working in Karnataka temples will be entitled to gratuity under the Karnataka Hindu Religious Institutions and Charitable Endowment Act.
- During another hearing, Justice Nagarathna and Justice H Sanjeev Kumar observed that there can be illegal parents, but there can never be an illegitimate child.
