Kevin Spacey ordered to pay $31 million to ‘House of Cards’ studios
An arbitrator ruled last year that Kevin Spacey and his production companies owed MRC, the studio behind the Netflix series “House of Cards,” nearly $31 million for breach of contract following multiple sexual assault allegations against the actor. Is.
The secret arbitrator’s ruling, which was issued 13 months ago, was made public on Monday when lawyers for the MRC filed a petition in a California court to confirm the award.
Mr Spacey was once the centerpiece of the hit Netflix series, which ran for six seasons between 2013 and 2018. Mr. Spacey played the lead character, nexus politician Frank Underwood, and served as the series’ executive producer.
While the sixth and final season was being filmed in 2017, actor Anthony Rapp accused Mr Spacey of having sex with her in 1986, when Mr Rapp was 14. MRC and Netflix suspended production on the series during the investigation.
Mr Rapp’s public allegation came just weeks after The New York Times and The New Yorker published articles about producer Harvey Weinstein and just as the #MeToo movement was gaining ground.
As of December 2017, MRC and Netflix fired the actor from the show, following further allegations against Mr. Spacey, including members of the “House of Cards” crew.
In arbitration, the MRC argued that Mr. Spacey’s behavior caused the studio millions of dollars in damages because it had already spent time and money developing, writing and shooting the final season. It also said it generated less revenue because the season had to be shortened from 13 to eight episodes as the character of Mr. Spacey was written.
The arbitrator expressly agreed, issuing a reward of approximately $31 million, including compensatory damages and attorneys’ fees.
Mr Spacey’s lawyer declined to comment.
In a statement, the MRC said, “The safety of our employees, set and work environment is of paramount importance to the MRC and why we move to accountability.”
