Lyricist Javed Akhtar is known for speaking on controversial issues. His statement has also come on the recent controversy over Fabindia’s ad. In this ad by a fashion brand selling clothes, Diwali was described as ‘Jashn-e-Riwaj’. People got angry about this on social media. Akhtar called such a reaction strange. The retail company withdrew it after the advertisement created a ruckus.

After the uproar over the ad, Javed Akhtar tweeted about it. He said, ‘I don’t understand why some people have a problem with Fabindia’s Jashn-e-Rawaz. Which in English means nothing but “festival of tradition”. How and why can this be a problem for anyone. this is madness.

What is the whole matter?
It’s October 9th. Fabindia did a promotional tweet. In this, models were shown wearing clothes related to Diwali collection. The fashion brand wrote in its tweet- ‘Welcoming the festival of love and lights, Fabindia’s Jashn-e-Rivaz is a collection that showcases the beauty of Indian culture.’

When the protest started, the post was removed
Many people on social media had objected to the use of the word Jashn-e-Riwaj for Diwali. BJP leader and MP from Bengaluru Tejashwi Surya was also among those who did this. Surya tweeted, ‘Deepawali festival is not a celebration-e-custom. Hindu festivals are being deliberately Abrahamized. Models are also not in traditional Hindu clothes. It should be opposed and boycotted. Any brand like Fabindia should bear the financial loss for such an act.

Soon the Boycott Fabindia campaign started on Twitter. Seeing the controversy escalating, Fabindia had removed its post related to the ad. He also clarified. He had said that Jashn-e-Rawaz was not his Diwali collection. Her clothing line for the festival will be called ‘Jhilmil Si Diwali’.

Akhtar’s tweet comes three days after another brand Dabur withdrew an advertisement for a gay couple celebrating the festival of Karva Chauth. The ad, which released on October 23, a day before the festival, was withdrawn after the Madhya Pradesh government warned of legal action.
