IPL 2022 Retention Rules: IPL retention rules; old teams can keep four players ahead of 2022 auction; three early picks for new teams before the 2022 auction; 5 rules of retention for IPL 2022, how much will be the purse, what will be the benefits for the teams, know everything

New Delhi
The retention rules for the next season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) i.e. 2022 have been revealed. According to ESPNcricinfo, the old 8 teams can retain a maximum of 4 players, while the two new teams Ahmedabad and Lucknow can pick 3 players each from the rest of the players’ pool just before the auction. However, no team will be exempted from Right to Match (RTM).

According to the report, these rules have been clarified by the IPL committee in an informal discussion with the franchisees this week. The purse for the IPL 2022 auction is likely to be Rs 90 crore (approximately USD 12 million). It was Rs 85 crore in the 2021 auction.

Teams had Rs 80 crore in the 2018 mega auction, out of which they could spend a maximum of Rs 33 crore on retained players. Teams were then allowed to buy back five players from retention and two right-to-match.

As per the ESPNcricinfo report, there will be no RTM card next year. Franchisees can field up to four players in two different combinations. First – three Indians and one foreigner, while the second – two Indians and two foreigners. That is, the team should retain three Indians and one foreigner out of 4 or keep two domestic and two foreign players with them.

Two new franchises have been allowed, two Indian players and one foreign player, but there is no clarity on whether these three players need to be released by other teams or from the larger auctioned player pool. Moving to the team will ultimately be the player’s choice, as he may choose to return to the auction pool for a better salary, even if his current team wants to retain him. The deadline for retaining players is likely to be by the end of November.
