India’s demand for duty free market for leather goods under FTA

New Delhi, Nov 17 (PTI) Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said on Wednesday that India has sought duty-free access to leather goods in the foreign market under the Free Trade Agreement (FTA).

India has made this demand from countries including United Arab Emirates (UAE), UK and Australia, with whom talks are going on regarding the FTA agreement.

He also expressed hope that talks for a similar agreement with the GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) group would be started in January or February next year. The member countries of the GCC include Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

Goyal said at the National Export Excellence Awards ceremony organized by the Council of Leather Exports (CLE) here, “We are trying to get duty free access for our leather industry to the market of other countries. In talks with UAE, UK and Australia. This is one of our key questions. I hope Israel can also open its doors to our leather products.”

“We are talking to all these countries for better market access and opportunities for the leather industry,” he said.

The Union Minister during this period asked the industry to work on scale and quality to make India a major hub for global brands.
