India understands the importance of universal immunization in containing the spread of the virus: Sitharaman

Washington, Oct 14 (PTI) Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Thursday said that India understands the importance of universal immunization in containing the spread of the coronavirus and the huge gap in vaccination access between low-income countries and developed countries is a matter of concern. .

Sitharaman said this while addressing the International Monetary and Financial Committee meeting of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) here.

The Finance Ministry tweeted, “Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman informed that India knows the importance of universal immunization in preventing the spread of the virus and the wide gap in vaccination coverage between low income countries and advanced countries is a matter of concern.”

The ministry said they emphasized the importance of a multilateral approach to tackle climate change and said it was important to recognize the formidable challenges that developing countries face in accessing affordable financing and technology.

His remarks on climate came ahead of the 2021 UN Climate Change Conference, which is scheduled to be held in Glasgow, Scotland, next month.

Sitharaman said that the IMF should help low-income countries to make necessary policy and increase their capacity.

According to the ministry, he further urged that the developed economies which have large reserves of SDRs should voluntarily help the needy countries with their Special Drawing Rights (SDRs).

Sitharaman is in Washington to attend the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.
