External Affairs Minister S.K. For the first time Jaishankar has openly supported Gutarais’ second term.

Gutarais took over as the ninth Secretary General of the United Nations on 1 January 2017 and his first term ends on 31 December this year. The tenure of the next Secretary-General will begin from January 1, 2022.

Former Portuguese Prime Minister Gutares previously served as United Nations Refugee High Commissioner from June 2005 to December 2015.
