External Affairs Minister S.K. Jaishankar met Gutareas here on Tuesday and discussed a number of important issues with him during a “long meeting with warmth” including the challenge of Kovid-19, revamping the vaccine supply chain, climate issues, regional Challenges and priorities of India included during the UN chairmanship in August.
Jaishankar tweeted after the meeting, “India values the leadership of UNSG of the United Nations in this challenging time.” Supported his candidature for a second term. ”
Later, the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations issued a press release saying that Jaishankar said that India attaches importance to the leadership of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in this challenging time. He was also apprised of India’s support for his candidature for a second term. ”
For the first time Jaishankar has openly supported Gutarais’ second term.
Gutarais took over as the ninth Secretary General of the United Nations on 1 January 2017 and his first term ends on 31 December this year. The tenure of the next Secretary-General will begin from January 1, 2022.
Former Portuguese Prime Minister Gutares previously served as United Nations Refugee High Commissioner from June 2005 to December 2015.
