Guterres set to be re-elected for a second term as un chief
United Nations, Jun 8 (PTI) UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is set to be re-elected as the world body chief after the Security Council (UNSG) unanimously recommended his name on Tuesday for a second term in office.
The fifteen-member Security Council met in-camera in which members approved a resolution recommending Guterres’ name for a second term as Secretary-General.
Sven Jürgensen, Estonia’s ambassador to the United Nations and President of the Council for the month of June, told reporters after the meeting that the Council has recommended to the General Assembly that Guterres be appointed Secretary General for a second term of five years from January 1, 2022 Let’s do.
“Although we had only one official candidate before us, the selection process has not changed since last time. Now we hand over the responsibility to the United Nations General Assembly,” he said. He said the General Assembly could vote on June 18 to re-elect Guterres.
Guterres said he was extremely honored to be recommended for a second term as UN chief. He said it was a great honor to have his name recommended by the Security Council for a second term as UN Secretary-General. He said he was grateful to the members of the Security Council who have placed their trust in him.
He said that since last four and half years we are facing complex challenges and during this it has been a great privilege to serve the people and be at the top of this organization. India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ambassador TS Tirumurti tweeted, “India welcomes the adoption of the Security Council resolution recommending a second term for the UN Secretary General.”
Last month, India backed Guterres’ candidacy as the head of the world body for a second term starting January 2022. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar had met Guterres at the United Nations Headquarters and expressed India’s support for his second term.
Jaishankar had tweeted after the meeting, “India values the leadership of UNSG at this challenging time. Later, India’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations issued a press release saying that Jaishankar conveyed that India values the leadership of the UN Secretary General in these challenging times. He was also apprised of India’s support of his candidacy for a second term.
Under the Charter of the United Nations, the Secretary-General is appointed by the General Assembly on the recommendation of the Security Council. If the current Secretary-General can get enough support from member states, he has the option of a second term.
Guterres took over as the ninth Secretary-General of the United Nations on January 1, 2017 and his first term ends on December 31 this year. The term of the next Secretary General will start from January 1, 2022. Guterres, the former Prime Minister of Portugal, previously served as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees from June 2005 to December 2015. Guterres has been the only official candidate for the post of Secretary General, nominated by the Portuguese government.
