Government seeks details of algorithmic processes from Facebook amid allegations of hate content

New Delhi, Oct 28 (PTI) The government has written to Facebook seeking details of the algorithms and processes used by the social media giant.

The move assumes significance as recently surfaced internal Facebook documents show that the company is battling a problem of misinformation, hate speech and celebratory content on violence in its biggest market, India.

Social media researchers have pointed out that there are groups and pages that are “filled with misleading, provocative and anti-Muslim content”, according to US media reports.

According to sources close to the developments, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has written to Facebook seeking information about the algorithms and processes used by the company.

He said the government has also asked Facebook to give details of the steps it has taken to protect users.

When contacted, Facebook declined to comment.

According to figures cited by the Indian government earlier this year, there are 53 crore people using WhatsApp, 41 crore on Facebook and 21 crore on Instagram in the country.

It is pertinent to mention here that India introduced new IT intermediary rules earlier this year, aimed at bringing more accountability to large tech companies, including Twitter and Facebook.
