Government launches ‘minikit’ program to increase production of pulses, oilseeds
These mini-kits are being provided by national agencies like National Seed Corporation (NCS), NAFED and Gujarat State Seed Corporation and the central government is fully funding them through the National Food Security Mission.
The seed ‘mini-kit’ program began with the distribution of high yielding seeds of pulses and oilseeds to farmers by Agriculture Minister Narendra Tomar, an official statement said.
Tomar said that the Center has been implementing various activities to increase the production and productivity of pulses and oilseeds under the National Food Security Mission in collaboration with the states.
The Agriculture Ministry said that since 2014-15, fresh focus is being given to increase the production of pulses and oilseeds.
The production of oilseeds increased from 27.51 million tonnes in 2014-15 to 36.57 million tonnes in 2020-21. Similarly, the production of pulses increased from 17.15 million tonnes to 25.56 million tonnes during this period.
The distribution of seeds under the mini kit program will continue till June 15, 2021 so that farmers get seeds before sowing of Kharif crops.
A total of 20,27,318 mini kits of pulses, more than eight lakh mini kits of soybean and 74,000 mini kits of groundnut will be given free of cost to the farmers under the National Food Security Mission.
