Government appoints 31 members in NCLT, ITAT
The National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) primarily deals with matters relating to company law and insolvency law, while the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT) deals with income tax matters.
These appointments also come at a time when the Supreme Court has expressed concern that the central government is “inactivating” tribunals by not appointing officers in quasi-judicial bodies facing shortage of staff.
It is worth noting that about 250 posts are lying vacant in various major tribunals and appellate tribunals like NCLT, DRT, TDSAT and SAT.
According to separate communication issued on September 11 by the Department of Personnel and Training based on decisions of the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, eight judicial and 10 technical members have been appointed in the NCLT, while six judicial and seven accountant members have been appointed in the ITAT. has been done.
The appointments in NCLT will be for a period of five years from the date of assuming office or till the age of 65 years or till further orders. At the same time, the appointments in ITAT have been made for a period of four years.
