deepak poonia poland open: deepak poonia pulled out of poland open due to hand injury
Indian wrestler Deepak Poonia, who has qualified for the Olympics, on Tuesday withdrew from the Poland Open to avoid aggravating a left arm injury. This is the last ranking series event before the Tokyo Games and Poonia was supposed to challenge in the 86kg category but pulled out of the quarterfinal match against Zahid Valencia of America.
This has been confirmed by the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI). WFI assistant secretary Vinod Tomar said, “Yes, we had given him the option. We don’t want to put pressure on wrestlers, Olympics are around the corner, so there is no point in taking risks. Poonia will be with the team till July 5 for the training camp. The camp is organized by the Federation of Poland.
WFI is also working with Turkey, Romania and Russia to organize training camps for Indian Olympic qualifying wrestlers. With the withdrawal of Poonia, there are now only three Indian wrestlers left in the competition.
Ravi Dahiya, who has qualified in 57kg at the Olympic Games, will challenge in the 61kg category at the Poland Open. Vinesh Phogat (53kg) and Anshu Malik (57kg) will challenge in the women’s event on Friday.
