Cyclone Tauktae over the Arabian Sea has affected many domestic flights. According to Vistara Airlines, inbound flights to Chennai, Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, Bangalore, Mumbai, Pune, Goa and Ahmedabad could be affected by May 17 due to inclement weather in the Arabian Sea. On the other hand, the country’s largest airline Indigo has said that flights to and from Kannur have been affected due to the cyclone.

Red alert has been sounded in five districts of Kerala, Mallapuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hold a meeting to prepare for dealing with this storm. According to the Meteorological Department, there is a possibility that this storm named ‘Taukate’ could turn into a ‘very severe cyclonic storm’ in the next few hours. Winds are expected to move at speeds of 150–160 kilometers per hour, which can go up to 175 kmph. In many parts of the west coast, this storm can become a cause of considerable trouble. By Sunday, it can turn into a very powerful cyclonic storm. It is likely to hit coastal areas like Gujarat, Maharashtra, Kerala.

Red alert in many districts
In view of the possibility of a cyclone, a red and orange alert has been issued in several districts of Gujarat and Kerala. Apart from this, Yellow Alert has been issued for Mumbai and Thane in Maharashtra. The IMD stated in its latest bulletin that ‘there is a possibility of turning into a deep pressure during the next 12 hours of the storm and a cyclonic storm during the next 12 hours. It is likely to intensify. It will probably move north-north-east by this evening. It will then move north-northwest and is likely to reach near the Gujarat coast by the morning of 18 May.
