New Delhi, Nov 18 (PTI) Coal and lignite companies plan to set up an additional 5,560 MW of renewable energy capacity by 2030 with an investment of over Rs 15,000 crore.

The Ministry of Coal gave this information on Thursday. The ministry said the companies’ plan is in line with India’s commitment to increase non-fossil energy capacity to 500 GW by 2030.

This will take the total installed capacity to 7,000 MW, the ministry said in a statement. Coal India (CIL) alone plans to install 3,000 MW of solar power capacity in the next five years to achieve its net zero emission target.

With the recent announcement of new climate goals by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at COP 26 under the ‘Panchamrut Strategy’, India has taken a major step towards reinforcing its commitment to clean energy.

According to the statement, coal has to play the role of primary fuel for power generation in the country till the time renewable energy sources are able to fully meet the country’s electricity requirement.
