Citigroup will pay travel costs for employee abortions in response to Texas law

Citigroup says it has begun covering travel expenses for employees who want abortions after Texas law imposed the most restrictive limits in the country and prompted similar proposals in other states.

“In response to changes to reproductive health care laws in some states in the US, starting 2022 we offer travel benefits to facilitate access to adequate resources,” the bank said in a filing Tuesday.

Of Citigroup’s 65,000 US employees, about 8,500 are in Texas.

The policy puts Wall Street banks with smaller or newer companies in response to a Texas law that bans abortions after approximately six weeks of pregnancy and offers the possibility of a $10,000 award for successful lawsuits against any woman. Which “aids or provokes” a woman to abort once fetal heart activity can be detected.

The law is the latest blow to the Supreme Court’s landmark 1973 decision in Roe v. Wade, which prohibits states from banning the procedure before a fetus is viable outside the womb, or before approximately 23 weeks of pregnancy. The novel approach to Texas law has avoided court challenges by putting its enforcement power in the hands of the public rather than the government.

Citigroup declined to comment on the new policy, which was previously reported by Bloomberg News. No other major bank has announced any such policy. JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley declined to comment on Thursday.

After it went into effect in September, many companies in other industries enacted policies opposing the law. dating app bumble created a Relief fund For state abortion seekers, Salesforce offered to move employees, and Lyft and Uber They said they would cover legal costs for drivers taking women to clinics to have abortions. Shar Dubey, chief executive of Match Group – which runs online dating sites including Match.com, OKCupid and Tinder – created a fund to support employees affected by the law.
