- Just before the assembly elections, politics is hot in Punjab regarding the BSF issue.
- Expressing displeasure over the decision, the Punjab government demanded the Center to withdraw it
- Former CM Captain Amarinder Singh surprised Congress by supporting this decision
Just before the assembly elections, politics is hot in Punjab regarding a new issue at this time. Controversy continues over the Centre’s decision to increase the BSF’s jurisdiction here. While the Punjab government has expressed displeasure over the decision and demanded the Center to withdraw it, former CM Captain Amarinder Singh is supporting this decision. Congress is shocked by this bet of Captain.
Punjab Deputy CM SS Randhawa, citing an interview of Amarinder in 2016, said that at that time the Captain had alleged nexus between BSF and Pakistani Rangers and is now supporting it.
‘Drugs consignment coming from Delhi in Punjab’
The Deputy CM said, ‘In 2016, Captain Amarinder Singh had said in an interview to a newspaper that there is a nexus between BSF and Pak Rangers, it needs to be broken. They should answer it first.
Randhawa said in a conversation with our associate newspaper that most of the consignments of drugs in Punjab are coming from Delhi. He also alleged that large quantities of drugs were being transported through ports across the country. Randhawa said, “Drugs are being brought in less quantity than the international border and for this also the BSF needs to keep a strict vigil in the limited width of 100-200 meters.”
Why is the BSF being expanded?
Randhawa further said, ‘Still if drugs or weapons are coming in by penetrating that limited area, then BSF is responsible for it. If he is not able to guard the limited area of the border which is his main duty, then why is he being given 50 km radius inside the border?’
Randhawa also questioned Amarinder Singh’s current stand, which is the exact opposite of his point in 2016. Randhawa said, “During his tenure, he (Amarinder) always defended the Punjab Police and now suddenly he has become a party to the BSF. He should explain the change in his stand.
Amarinder alleges nexus between BSF and Pak Rangers
In March 2016, Amarinder, while addressing a public meeting, alleged an nexus between the BSF and Pakistan Rangers to promote drug smuggling. Rahul Gandhi was also present in this event. Amarinder had said, ‘When I was the CM, I met the then Home Minister LK Advani and told him about the alliance between BSF and Pak Rangers.’
Amarinder had further said, “I had suggested that the BSF platoons be changed every year instead of two years to break this nexus so that the platoons shift before the alliance is formed. He (Advani) said it would be very expensive but I said nothing is more precious than the life of the people of Punjab.
What did Amarinder say in the interview?
After this, in an interview given to an English newspaper, Amarinder had said, ‘Drug route is a problem when I was the Chief Minister of Punjab (2002-2007). I had suggested that the BSF battalions stationed there should have a one-year turnover, normally two years. The Indian government had rejected it saying that it was too expensive. I believe there’s a lot of money in drugs, and I thought a Nexus would develop in two years.
What is the Centre’s decision?
On Wednesday, the Union Home Ministry has extended the jurisdiction of the Border Security Force (BSF) in three states, one of which is Punjab. As per the new decision of the Centre, the BSF’s jurisdiction in the state has been increased from 15 kms to 50 kms. That is, within the Indian territory from the border, BSF can conduct search operation, arrest and seizure within a radius of 50 km, that too without passing any order.
