The next entry in the Assassin’s Creed game franchise is almost here. Ubisoft has dropped the first trailer for Assassin’s Creed Shadows, which will launch later this year. The trailer spared no time in introducing the two protagonists of the game ahead of its world premiere. One is samurai Yasuke, an African man who became a bodyguard in the service of Japanese daimyo Oda Nobunaga.

The second protagonist is Nao, a shinobi character whose opposition to Nobunaga’s war initially pits him against Yasuke. Shadows was rumored to feature two main protagonists. Like Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, before the official trailer was released, the game’s main content was leaked showing samurai and shinobi protagonists.

Until 2022, Assassin’s Creed Shadows was known by its codename, Assassin’s Creed Red. Earlier this week, Ubisoft announced the official name change in addition to the upcoming trailer. Red/Shadows was originally released as part of Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed roadmap, which also includes other in-development titles in the franchise, including Assassin’s Creed Z and Codename Hex.

While the codename Hex remains largely a secret, Assassin’s Creed Z was officially announced at Gamescom last year. It is a mobile game co-developed by Level Infinity, a subsidiary of Tencent Games, and its first beta testing was completed last August.

However, Z may take some time to release: it has reportedly been delayed because publisher Tencent has shifted development focus from licensed Western IPs to its own games. Ubisoft hasn’t shown any gameplay of Nao or Yasuke yet, but we’ll find out soon when Assassin’s Creed Shadows launches on Xbox, PlayStation, Mac, and PC on 15 November 2024.
