New Delhi. One of the big news of last year was the launch of WhatsApp’s new feature WhatsApp Pay. This feature was started for users in India last year. It is now reported that soon users will have to verify their identity to make payments through WhatsApp. According to reports, the verification system for making payments from the app may be mandatory due to the v2.21.22.6 beta version of WhatsApp. Strings found by XDA Developers during an APK teardown read, “Your identity could not be verified. Try uploading the documents again.” and “Verify your identity to use Payments on WhatsApp.”

It is worth noting that users do not need to verify their identity to make payments through payment apps. Even UPI apps like PhonePe and Google Pay don’t do this. While some apps like Paytm and MobiKwik make users get their KYC done. Till now, users in India did not need a mobile number to verify identity and make payments through WhatsApp. But now there are indications that soon users will have to verify their identity to make payments through WhatsApp.

Although, no such official announcement has been made by WhatsApp so far, but the strings are quite likely that soon the new wallet system of the app or the payment feature may come directly on the app. Earlier this month, WhatsApp updated its user interface (UI) for users who started the payment option on its app. For Indian users, WhatsApp has started including the rupee symbol in the chat composer to initiate payments.

Using the rupee symbol in the chat composer, users who understand only Hindi will be able to send money or make payments. Apart from this, the camera icon in the chat composer will allow users to make payments by scanning any QR code at over 20 million stores in India. WhatsApp got approval from the National Payments Corporation of India to go live Unified Payments Interface (UPI) in November last year. There were even reports that WhatsApp was also working on bringing a cashback feature for WhatsApp Payments users in India.

But now due to the v2.21.22.6 beta version of WhatsApp, the verification system for making payments from the app may be mandatory. In such a situation, it is expected that soon an official update will come from WhatsApp regarding this.
