Amazon Web Services blocks new sign-ups from Russia and Belarus

Amazon has quietly stopped allowing customers in Russia and Belarus to open new cloud computing accounts.

The policy change for Amazon Web Services began over the weekend, but was not announced publicly until Tuesday, according to an internal communication seen by The New York Times.

“Given the current events and the uncertainty and lack of credit currently available in Russia, we are not accepting new Russian AWS customers at this time,” Drew Herdener, a top company spokesman, said in a statement.

AWS does not have data centers or offices in Russia, and has said that its biggest customers are multinational companies with local development teams.

Many multinational corporations have reduced their presence in Russia. McDonald’s on Tuesday said it was temporarily closing about 850 of its restaurants there, and that oil companies were under pressure to stop buying Russian oil even before President Biden banned energy imports from the country.
