Alex Jones guilty in Sandy Hook defamation suit

A superior court in Connecticut granted a comprehensive victory to the families of eight people killed in a 2012 mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., for defamation lawsuit against far-right broadcaster and conspiracy theorist Alex Jones and his Infowars media outlet did. ,

A Connecticut judge ruled on Monday that because Mr Jones refused to return court-ordered documents, including financial records, he was guilty of default. The ruling combined with three previous rulings in Texas to provide the families of 10 Sandy Hook shooting victims four victories in four defamation lawsuits against Mr. Jones.

Mr Jones spread bogus theories for years that the shooting in which 20 first graders and six teachers were killed was a government-led conspiracy to confiscate the firearms of Americans and that the victims’ families were “actors” in the scheme.

Sandy Hook families say Mr Jones benefited from spreading lies about the murders of his relatives. Mr Jones has disputed that, while failing to produce enough records to bolster his claims over the years.

Juries in both states will next decide how much Mr Jones should pay in damages to the families, on top of court costs. Those trials are scheduled for next year in both states.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
